ABOUT KENYA

A land of remarkable natural beauty, Kenya is also culturally and linguistically diverse. The Swahili people (mixing Arab and Bantu cultures)live at the coast, while pastoralist communities are in the north, central and western regions. The Maasai are now well known but actually make up a relatively minor percentage of the Kenyan population.

Most Kenyans are Christian (45% Protestant and 33% Roman Catholic). Between 10% and 40% are Muslim (60% of which live at the Coast, comprising half of the regions population).

Most Kenyans are bilingual in English and Swahili, also a large percentage speak the mother tongue of their ethnic tribe. The largest ethnic groups in Kenya are: Kikuyu 22%, Luhya 14%, Luo 13%, Kalenjin 12%, Kamba 11%, Kisii 6%, Meru 6%, other African 15%, non-African (Asian, European, and Arab) 1%. The largest cities in Kenya are Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret.

Asha Cottage is located in Kwale district, Coast Province, fully immersed in the local Digo and Swahili cultures. English is widely spoken, and some even speak German and Italian!
